From the late 19th century to approximately 1950 the antique Persian rugs were hand-woven in Iran (Persia). Particularly before World War II most rugs were woven with natural dyes. These are one-of-a-kind antique Persian rugs, and of course, there is a finite quantity of them. There is no more production of these exquisite antique Persian rugs. Although there are reproductions of these made in Turkey and India that are fine rugs, but not generally one-of-a-kinds and have a totally different knot.
The antique Persian rugs are generally known by the name of the weaving area! Not unlike French wine, i.e. a Heriz rug was woven in the Heriz weaving district in Northwest Iran. Tabriz, Maylayer, Hamadan, are weaving districts from which these antique Persian rugs are named. When one can find these older pieces in good condition at a bargain price it is quite special.
